First-time Home Buyer Tax Credit

Congress has enacted into law an $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit as part of the $787 billion stimulus package. Here are 6 things to know about the tax credit.

1) First-time home buyers can receive an $8,000 tax credit for any principal residence purchased in 2009 and the credit does not have to be repaid.

2) First-time home buyer is defined as someone who has not owned a principal residence in the past three years.

3) Purchases must be made between January 1, 2009 and December 1, 2009.

4) Income limits. The credit maxes out for single tax payers who earn up to $75,000 and married or filing jointly up to $150,000.

5) Since the tax refund is "refundable", a home buyer can receive the full $8,000 even if their tax liability is less than $8,000.

6) Recapture. Home buyers have to own the home for 3 years or they have to return the money to the government with the exceptions of death or divorce.
